Artist statment
Turtle Islands is the name that was given to the region of north america by its native inhabitants. In their myths the great spirit created their homeland by placing the earth on a giant tortoise. The turtle symbolizes long life, protection and fertility in native mythology.
The map shows the names of countries and cultures that existed before the arrival of the white man. In 1492 with the arrival of Europeans in the region the process of destruction started and continued untill the American Declaration of Independence in 1776.
